AGT

At 661 VGS, AGT training is normally only available to cadets appointed as Flight Staff Cadets (FSCs). Those lucky to be selected will have shown exceptional commitment, the potential to progress further and will have completed a successful GS Solo.

After appointment at the Squadron FSCs will progress to the first stage of Advanced Gliding Training and gain the prestigious Gold Wings.

AGT 1 Syllabus

  • Revision of Basic Handling
  • Revision of Stall Prevention
  • Revision of Circuits
  • Revision of Emergency Procedures
  • Additional Training in Advanced Turning Techniques
  • Additional Training in Advanced Landing Techniques
  • 5 x Solo Circuits

AGT 2 provides the opportunity for continued training allowing cadets to increase their flying skills then progress to solo soaring.

AGT 2 Syllabus

  • Revision of AGT 1 as Required
  • Additional Training in Thermal & Wave Soaring
  • Training in Soaring Protocol
  • 2 x 30 minute Solo Soaring Sorties

(Ridge soaring is not applicable at Kirknewton, however there may be other opportunities to train & carry out ridge soaring at other sites)

BGA Qualifications

Although not part of the AGT syllabus, additional launches may be used to gain British Gliding Association height and endurance qualifications when local conditions and resources permit. With a number staff who are also qualified BGA examiners, the Bronze C examination can also be taken.
